EDGARxbrl™ gives you a choice of two approaches for mapping/tagging your financial tables:

It provides pre-tagged templates for relatively small and straightforward financials. These templates include all the line items typically found in small-company filings. Simply match line items in your financial tables to entries in the templates, then fill in the fields - and your financials are done! No tagging is required since the templates are pre-tagged, which simplifies the process and avoids tagging errors. Extensions can be easily created right within the templates. And unlike some other products, EDGARxbrl™ templates are straightforward Excel spreadsheets - simple to understand and work with.
For larger and more complex financial tables, or tables that require less commonly used tags from the standard taxonomies, EDGARxbrl™ provides a powerful Map and Capture interactive tagging workflow with bulk capture of labels and data directly from your original financials. EDGARxbrl™ provides extensive tools to easily browse and search the taxonomy for picking and choosing tags, and extensions can be easily created.

For ultimate flexibility, you can map some tables using templates and others using interactive tagging in the same filing.

Bring your filings in-house after your first filing, even if that filing was produced by a different product or preparer

EDGARxbrl™ can create pre-tagged templates specific to your company's financials simply by opening your prior quarter's filing, even if that filing was produced by a different product or preparer. Think about it. Your earlier XBRL filing contains all the tagging and extensions required by your company. The hard work has been done. Subsequent quarters report different dates and numbers, but the concepts are largely the same. By creating pre-tagged templates from your prior filing, subsequent filings are simply a matter of filling in fields in these templates. In addition, the templates accommodate changes to line items or concepts if there are any.

Once your first XBRL filing has been done, nothing could be easier than using EDGARxbrl™ to prepare your subsequent filings in-house. Savings from a couple of quarterlies can more than pay for the cost of the product.

Easy Text Block Tagging (level 1)

EDGARxbrl™ provides the easiest possible solution for block tagging the notes to the financials. Simply select the text in your original document (Word or anything else), and drag it to the appropriate tag in the taxonomy. If an extension concept is required it can be easily created on the fly to drag the text into. Unlike other products, you don't have to worry about proper HTML construction and EDGAR validation. EDGARxbrl™ does all that for you - automatically.

As an alternative, you may tag text within Word and then import the tagging in bulk into the XBRL filing. No retagging is needed if the tagged Word document is edited or revised, and the tagging persists in the document for reuse in subsequent quarters.

Detailed Text Block Tagging (levels 2 to 4)

EDGARxbrl™ provides complete support for detailed tagging of text blocks, while giving you the most efficient and easy-to-use detailed tagging interface in the industry:

SEC-specific Validation

EDGARxbrl™ includes extensive validation capabilities letting you check your filing before submission - saving time, effort and cost. This includes not only XBRL validation, but also additional validation required for SEC filings. Note that SEC XBRL filings are Interactive Data filings, the specifications of which are more stringent than those for generic XBRL.

As noted in the SEC specification at 6.5, "A valid Interactive Data instance is a valid XBRL 2.1 instance, but not all valid XBRL 2.1 instances are valid Interactive Data instances." As a result, generic XBRL products may not catch SEC-specific errors. On the other hand, EDGARxbrl™ was developed specifically for SEC filings, and alerts you to XBRL-valid but SEC-invalid constructs such as:

Synonymous contexts and units
Unused contexts and units
Overlapping time periods, such as a quarter ending on the same day as the start of the next quarter
Start-of-period time instants in contexts
Use of forever in contexts
Dimension items in an extension taxonomy
Scenario elements in contexts
Disallowed entity identifiers in contexts
Required Document and Entity tags
Syntax of text block notes containing HTML
Many other SEC-specific validation checks

By not creating such constructs in the first place and catching them in filings prepared using other products, EDGARxbrl™ saves you time, money and effort while making it much easier to prepare 100% SEC-valid XBRL instances.

Error Correction

XBRL complex, and errors can easily creep into your filing. The most common source of errors is incorrect mapping/tagging, where an incorrectly tagged line item results in facts in the same or other tables to be overwritten with incorrect values. Similarly, labelling conflicts across tables can result in incorrect labels in the rendering.

EDGARxbrl™ catches and highlights such errors, and provides powerful tools that let you easily locate and correct them. In the interactive proof, such conflicts are highlighted in red. Clicking the conflicting value shows you the cause, and lets you fix the error easily.
